The Bangsamoro have long defended their right to self-determination. Since the Spanish colonization of what the conquistadores would later call the Philippines, up to the American occupation, Muslims in Southern Philippines have battled invaders who sought to violently subdue them, in order to get hold of the resource rich land and resources of Mindanao. Manila-based governments have engaged the Muslims alternately in war and peace, and it wasn’t until recently, under the administration of Pres. Benigno Aquino, that peace seemed to be within reach. The peace was broken, however, on January 25 members of the Philippine National Police’s Special Action Force launched an operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao. The incident burst into the national consciousness, so to speak, and drew attention to the fragile peace that has been holding in Mindanao for at least three years now. Not many have properly explained the history behind the Bangsamoro struggle for self-determination and explored the implications of the war to the people. This timely documentary is an attempt to discuss the roots of the conflict and present a deep understanding of the Bangsamoro’s struggle to attain genuine peace and autonomy. Trouble begins where the road ends. Trouble is now ending as the roads enter the war zones and give hope to those who have lost hope. For the past years, diffidence and seclusion etched deprivation and limited opportunities for the inhabitants of Central Mindanao. Though the lands warrant bountiful resources to explore, isolation and predominance of conflict hampers development in the lives of residents of these areas. Despite the sordid circumstances, the town of Datu Saudi Ampatuan in the province of Maguindanao formidably shares the story of how conflict areas embellish possibilities into developing communities. Situated in the central plains of Maguindanao, Datu Saudi shares untoward reference as the “heart of conflict” in mainland Mindanao together with the municipalities of Pagatin, Mamasapanao, and Shariff Aguak otherwise known as the SPMS Box due to its quadrangular formation. The ensuing conflicts resulted to the displacement of people and spoilage of crops that could have generated economic gains. As communities become engulfed with fighting, farmers’ activity are reduced minimally to nurture agriculture. Residents especially women and children bore the brunt of these adverse conditions. From a terrifying battle ground, Datu Saudi continues to transform as one of the economic frontiers and progress felt by the Bangasamoro people. For a consecutive bout of four years, the Hataman administration’s platform raised consciousness of collective and inclusive growth manifested through infrastructure development and provision of social agenda. This thrust of social transformation and rapid progress marks the heralding era of amplified societal investments. Among these, Datu Saudi is blessed to be one of the forerunners of infrastructure investments manifested through infrastructures, road construction & expansion. In the years to come, inhabitants of Datu Saudi will continuously reap benefits out of the investment projects. Farmers and merchants can have better-off chances of marketing their goods and produce to and from potential trading centers. Before, most of the people during crop yield tend to take lengthy hours of travel just to trade the fruits of their labor for meager compensation. Paths, now concrete, would generate greater mobility both for resources and the people. Students now take good advantage of school facilities erected. Tourist spots like the overlooking Mt. Perez and reputable Masjid Dimaukom or Pink Mosque brings forth collective interest and discovery of the picturesque wonders Datu Saudi has to offer. The road to development purposely benefitting the inhabitants of Datu Saudi hallmarks the ushering of prosperity to the once deprived areas of the country. With the surge of development, the infrastructure projects parallel to the Pink Mosque epitomizes the blessings and heartfelt gratitude of the people that symbolizes their filial compassion, unwavering hope, and determination for the cause of peace.

Philippines, with its richness in natural resources is not far from other countries such as Japan and America. But as seasons of people governing the public offices come and go, Philippines continue to ditch into even growing rate of poverty, unemployment and crisis. Is it culture? Is it greed? This video has been made when MLPI HRMD Manager, Mam Emy requested us (SOCSKSARGEN Region) to present a video tribute for the brutal killings in Maguindanao back in December 2009. She spared a part of the program in their Christmas Party in Cebu for this seasonal video. The playing of this is supposed to be coupled with the lighting of the candle by no less than Señorito Michel and Señorita Amparito Lhuillier but due to vague communication in the control room, only a part of this video was played. In the same night, selected employees from SOCSKSARGEN presented a Dance Drama (locally known as ADUSAY in South Cotabato) after the video was played. This video depict the violence in Mindanao particularly in the area of Maguindanao. It calls for Justice which most of the time left unanswered.

Mindanao Fights the Copper Miners (1998): The discovery of Asia's second largest copper deposit placed indigenous communities in fear of losing their lands and having their unique culture destroyed by global mining corporations. This film looks at their struggle, showing the lengths that some people will go to protect their heritage. The kind of spectacular wealth that Australia's Western Mining Corporation are looking forward to harvesting. Yet the land is also ancestral land, home of the spirits of trees and rivers. The company have been quick to quiet locals' fears. New community centres, houses and health clinics have sprung-up as a sign of the prosperity the mine could spread. They've even signed an agreement with local leaders in support of the mine. But many are changing their minds. It's well understood here that in the past troops have protected logging and other businesses against tribal hostilities. And they're turning to rebel groups to ready themselves for a fight. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front are strong in Mindanao. We watch them training in full military regalia with plenty of firepower. Al Haj Murad is the guerrilla's military leader. When locals speak, he listens...and he doesn't like what he hears about the WMC. It seems there is a real chance the company's presence here could re-ignite violence. The Philippines is rich in mineral resources but it also sits in the Pacific Ring of Fire and in the typhoon belt which could spell danger for the mining industry.

Mindanao is a very rich island in terms of its natural resources. 60% to almost 100% of the major crops (rubber, cacao, pineapple, banana, cassava, coffee, corn and coconut) produced in the Philippines come from Mindanao. Mindanao has 16 major river systems producing thousands of tons of fish daily. Mindanao is home to the country’s mineral resources. More than half of the estimated mineral wealth of the Philippines is found in Mindanao. Mindanao has the country’s largest reserves of the following minerals: Copper–5 billion tons, Gold–3.4 billion tons, Aluminum–292 million tons, and Iron411 million tons. Mindanao hosts some of the biggest companies in the world: BHP Billiton, Russell Mining Co., Xstrata, Anglo-American, Sumitomo, Toronto Ventures, Inc., Firestone, Bridgestone, Dole and Castle and Cook.

Achieving a quality education in the indigenous cultural communities (ICCs) in Southern Mindanao, Philippines can be very challenging. Most of the schools in these communities lack the substantial educational resource materials and do not have their own school libraries that could aid the teachers as well as students to have the same academic support enjoyed by other school counterparts in the town center and even in highly urbanized cities. In 2007, GFI started outreach for one elementary school mainly by sending books, some toys and kids clothes, school supplies and other educational resource materials collected from donors and partners/supporters in Atlanta. Shipping of the boxes were made possible by individual contribution to GFI, fundraising events and grant money from partner ministry, Cross of Life Church. All Board Members of the Galing Foundation, Inc. are serving as volunteers. Photos in this video were mostly from schools assisted and those from GFI volunteer/partners in Atlanta and in Mindanao.
