Speaking before the students and faculty members of the Ateneo de Davao University and several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), President Duterte affirmed the government’s stand on prioritizing environmental protection, saying it is everybody’s obligation to protect the resources of the country. He discussed the dangers brought by illegal activities that destroy nature in Mindanao, particularly mining and illegal logging, emphasizing that these are the leading factors in the destruction of the land and soil in the region. He blamed the oligarchs for the continuous damage, saying, “ito iyong mga tao na kinukuha iyong yaman ng ating bayan wala namang ginagastos kundi mga laway nila at koneksyon. And they get most of the concessions, the franchises that is given freely through money to influence and share greed kasi meron sila.” He added, “in an island as fragile as Mindanao, kung bubutasan mo ito at sirain mo, there will never be a tomorrow for your children. Kaya kami dito nagtatapang-tapangan, because I want to protect Davao City and my country for their children.” President Duterte vowed to fight the clutches of those oligarchs whom he considers as ‘monsters’ even if he is just two months in office. Moreover, he ordered to dismantle all the fish pens crowding the Laguna de Bay and give back the lake to the poor fishermen so that they will continue to benefit from it. He said, “if there is inequality, it will be resolved in favor of the poor as against the rich.” The President continued to remind the people, especially the Filipino family, on the risks of using drugs. He expressed his disappointment on its damaging effect to a normal family, saying, “what used to be a typical Filipino family is destroyed and becomes dysfunctional family. Yan ang hindi ko matanggap na gawin mo ang Pilipino na ganun…Do not do it. Do not destroy my country…Do not destroy the young.” * * * Connect with RTVM Website: http://rtvm.gov.ph Facebook: www.facebook.com/presidentialcom Twitter: @RTVMalacanang Google+: google.com/+RTVMalacanang Instagram: @RTVMalacanang

Introduced in the 14th century by Arab traders and further promoted by missionaries from Indonesia and Malaysia in the 15th and early 16th centuries, Islam had taken root in Mindanao. In line with Islamic tradition, a governance structure in the form of the Sultanates was already in place. The ability of the Muslim to thwart successive attempts of the Spanish colonial forces to subjugate them and set them apart from the northern inhabitants of the Philippine archipelago, who were mostly conquered and converted to Christianity. Deep distrust and suspicion were cultivated by the colonizers among the Christian converts against their Muslim brothers as a way of ensuring their control of most of the country and its inhabitants. Intermittent wars were fought between the Spanish invaders and their local Christian allies against Muslim fighters throughout three centuries of Spanish colonial rule. The advent of the American colonial rule did little to change the situation. During the american regime a series of land laws that favored Christian settlers and private corporations at the expense of the Moros and Indigenous People (IPs) were passed. This, along with the implementations of land based programs in Mindanao, anchored on a property rights regime alien to the customs and traditions of the Moros and the IPs, which led to massive dispossession of Moro lands by Christian settlers and private investors. After the country gained independence from the United States, a series of land resettlement programs in Mindanao in the 1950's to 1960's in further accelerated this dispossession. The resettlement programs were undertaken to ease the social unrest spawned by the Communist rebellion in the northern islands of Luzon and the Visaya's and, purportedly, to further develop Mindanao by exploiting its vast natural resources. By the late 1960's and and the early 1970's tension increased between the Christian settlers and Moros doe to growing land scarcity and fueled by centuries of distrust between two groups.
